Coronary
computed tomography angiography (CTA) is a non-invasive examination
of the beating heart. It is more accurate than the standard stress
test, and is faster and less invasive than a cardiac catherization.
The test uses advanced computed tomography (CT)
with a contrast dye to obtain high-resolution 3D pictures of the
heart and the vessels. It helps
confirm or rule out the presence of any significant blockage
in the heart arteries.
How CTA is performed
Coronary CTA takes about five
to ten minutes to perform and can be accomplished in an outpatient
setting. It involves injecting the patient’s arm with a contrast
dye with the timed test beginning seconds later. During the scan,
x-rays pass through the body providing cross-sectional views of the
patient’s heart. Special detectors in the scanner record the
x-rays while a computer reassembles the views into a high-resolution
image of the heart.
Special Considerations
Please talk with your physician or the imaging
center for specific instructions prior your test.
